Thank you for your interest in the Summer Training as Research Scholars Program.л_ STaRS is designed to promote access to graduate education for talented undergraduates from minority groups traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical sciences:л_ African-American, Hispanic,л_ Native American/Native Alaskan, and Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian.л_ STaRS is a grant funded program throughл_the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH and is runл_by Boston University_Сйsл_Division of Graduate Medical Sciences, a recognized leader in graduate education and biomedical research. STaRS is a dynamic and focused program that is designed specifically for the enhancement of skills required for successful entrance and completion of a graduate program or an MD/PhD program in the biomedical sciences. STaRS offers motivated and academically talented students a valuable opportunity to confirm a strong interest in doctoral studies particularly in the areas of heart, lung and blood research. During the ten week onsite summer internship, scholars will be mentored in the laboratory by faculty and group of lab members from the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences.л_ Biomedical laboratories that participate in STaRS reside in the doctoral departments and programs within GMS and placement of scholars are aligned with their research interests. After several weeks of gaining familiarity with the equipment and routine of the laboratory, the research scholar will gradually be guided toward development of an independent research project. The research scholar will present his/her project at a symposium at the close of the program, which recognizes theл_ accomplishment ofл_ each scholar of the STaRS cohort. Research scholars have the opportunity toл_ participate in a variety of enrichment and professional development activities offered through the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences, departmental affiliation and/or laboratory. These activities include: journal club,л_ research seminars, science talks, career discussions and workshops focused on building particular skills such as resume or abstract writing. STaRS is located on the Boston University Medical Campus(BUMC) in the South End of Boston, aл_ small multicultural neighborhood with a lively arts community.л_ Boston is defined by its neighborhoods.л_ As a major college-oriented city Boston offers many cultural and recreational activities to engage the varied interests ofл_ a large and diverse student population.л_л_ STaRS provides opportunities for research scholars to explore Boston, visit major attractions, and meet other like-minded students enjoying summer in the city. Qualified STaRS applicants must be a United States citizen or permanent resident. In addition, applicants must be a rising junior or rising senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 andл_ a declared major in a basic, biomedical or life science. Our most competitive applicants have some prior research experience as well. *Please note: There is no application fee for the STaRS program.
