Description

Summer Camps // College of Science // University of Notre Dame This camp is an extension of JINA's Art to Science program which introduces children to the wonders of the physical universe. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach to learning by integrating reading, writing, and a variety of art forms with math and the physical sciences. Participants will learn about math, physics, astronomy, and chemistry by creating works of art and hands-on projects. Chosen activities will be designed by collaborations with local science and art teachers, QuarkNet, Riverbend Math Center, the NASA Planck Mission, and more! The DNA Learning Center offers a hands-on environment in which children can explore and enhance their interest, knowledge and scientific skills in the area of genetics and Physics of Atomic Nucleibiology.л_Whether simply interested in science or planning to pursue a teaching, medical or research career, the DNA Learning Center Summer Camps would be a great option for students who have completed grades 7 through 10 for residential camps and grades 6 through 9 for day camps.л_All of the camps will include experiments such as genotyping themselves for particular traits, DNA barcoding, and genetically testing for GMO foods.л_ The Physics of Atomic Nuclei (PAN) is an outreach program at two world leading nuclear physics laboratories:л_Nuclear Science Laboratoryл_located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and theл_National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratoryл_located on the campus of Michigan State University. It is run by theл_Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA)л_and either NSL or NSCL faculty and staff. We welcome students who have completed at least one year of high school and science teachers (primarily high school physics or chemistry, though others have found the program useful). The program introduces participants to the fundamentals of the extremely small domain of atomic nuclei and its connection to the extremely large domain of astrophysics and cosmology. Sensing Our Worldл_is a one week-long summer program that is designed to expose middle school students to the exciting world of science, mathematics, and technology. Participants meet with various scientists to learn about their research, visit different academic departments & research labs on campus, and learn through intensive hands-on activities. Program instructors include Notre Dame faculty, staff, and graduate students from the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, and Engineering Departments.
