The purpose of this Young Engineer Summer Camp (a mixed-gender day program for high school students) program is to recruit prospective students from the state of Texas and surrounding states. This week-long summer camp is designed to enhance participants' interest in engineering as a potential career, and develop analytical skills needed for college-level courses. With the merging interests in nano- and micro-scale science and engineering as well as quantitative understanding of biological and other complex systems, engineering education is becoming more and more multidisciplinary and dependent on basic science and mathematics. Many areas of research are rapidly advancing due to the combined efforts of science and engineering. In some cases, fields of research that were stagnant under the exclusive domain of one discipline have been rejuvenated with new discoveries through collaboration with practitioners from other disciplines. The McCoy School of Engineering at Midwestern State University is well positioned to pursue this multidisciplinary engineering education model, since our School of Engineering is within the College of Science and Mathematics. Currently, the McCoy School of Engineering has about 250 undergraduate students. The overall objectives of Midwestern State University Young Engineer Summer (MSU YES) Camp are: to provide participants with an introduction of basic science and mathematics necessary for various disciplines of engineering; to motivate high school students to further studies in fields related to science and technology; and to introduce Midwestern State University and Wichita Falls, TX to prospective students in the state of Texas and surrounding states.
